An estimated 18,000 abandoned oil & gas wells

With an estimated 18,000 abandoned oil and gas wells in need of plugging, Oklahoma has a well problem. The average cost to plug an abandoned well is twenty-two thousand dollars. The state has a well-plugging program funded by an excise tax and federal funds are also used, but that funding is on hold. State lawmakers are working on legislation to secure more funding for these efforts.
